How To Make Money with Niche Sites: Week 9

JillAffiliate Marketing, Blog4 Comments

Annnnnd we're back. We spent a short stint down at the gorgeous island of Puerto Galera here in the Philippines where we talked business non-stop, cruised around the island on a rocky little boat, and got burnt to a crisp.

You know, all the things dream vacations are made of.

But even though we were burnt, saw a dead body on the street in Manila, and were dead effin' tired by the time we got home, we still got to spend time around this…

So I guess life isn't TOO bad. But this post isn't about islands, it's about the case study (I promise!), so let's take a look at what's been going on with our site for the last week.

An Update on

Well, we finally made it back into the 20's where we held position for…oh…3 whole days before our site went back into the 30's. *thumbs down*

I swear, Google is acting like a hormonal teenage girl lately with how much our site has been bouncing around the SERPS. In fact, I don't know if I have seen this many constant changes in months with one of our sites, but like I said it's all a part of the game.

I mean, don't get me wrong, we're used to seeing fluctuations with a new site as Google does take a while to index and  adjust the rankings after a bunch of new links kick in, but this is slightly abnormal.

It just seems as though we're plateauing with this site, and I'm starting to think that we may have to push a few more links at it to get that bastard moving up the rankings.

Now I know we said we would only drive 30 links to the site from our private network, but hey, sometimes a website in a competitive niche needs a few more links. So we're going to drive a few more and see what happens. Besides, why have a private network of sites if you can't use it!

I may also cool down my weekly updates and wait for something worthwhile to talk about. This is mostly because I feel as though I'm struggling for things to talk about when in fact, occasionally websites like this take time to make money.

So, we're going to give it time (and links!) and see what happens with it.

The bright side to all of this however, is even though our rankings aren't doing what I'm silently screaming at them to do, our traffic is improving gradually with more organic traffic coming in from both keywords we are targeting, and ones we're not (such as “Naturaful for flat chest”).

Speaking of rankings and traffic…

Life Post-Hummingbird

You may remember a few weeks ago we mentioned that about 6 of our twenty-something sites took a hit after the second Hummingbird update rolled out.

Well, it seems as though things are calming down a little on that front and some of our slapped websites are starting to make a (welcomed) comeback. Like this one, for example…

effects of Hummingbird update

This is what it looks  like when one of your best money-making sites takes a hit due to an update, makes you wince with frustration, and then recovers within a month—even though you didn't do anything to the site other than stay patient.

This is the whole reason I ranted about Google updates and tried to drive home the point that these updates are all a part of the game and if you do get hit with one it doesn't mean you won't recover.

Sometimes you just have to be patient and wait for the search results to even back out, so you can get your traffic and rankings back.

So if one of your sites ever takes a hit (or has suffered a few by now) don't stress about it. Just keep doing what you are doing and use the “down time” to run some keyword research, see if you can find a new niche to enter, and start building a new site around it.

I know I sound like a broken record, but it bears repeating: These updates, regardless of how annoying they are, are all a part of the game in affiliate marketing. And if you can stay strong and withstand them, you have a damn good chance at making a ridiculous amount of money with them—especially when you hit the jackpot with a particular niche or product.

Just stick with it, and remember: Most people tend to give up when the path in front of them seems to be difficult or uncomfortable. But if you can stay committed in your efforts to make this monetization model (and lifestyle) work for yourself, you will have no choice but to be successful!

We are living proof of that, and we want the same for you.

Your turn: Where are you at with your niche site? Are you still hacking away at it, or are you considering giving up because it seems to hard? Get honest and share your thoughts below.

Excellent article! So many small businesses I know have been affected by Google’s changes (I like the Hormonal Teenager analogy!) and it’s refreshing to hear that it is possible to recover, albeit slowly…

    • Absolutely! Sometimes you just have to wait it out…and sometimes you have to adjust your site and make some tweaks, but more often than not it is easy to recover…as long as you’re patient lol 😉

And thanks for the kind words, happy to hear you dug it!

Little off topic but curious what tool you are using to see your SERP rank for specific keywords per the first screen shot above?
