How To Make Money with Niche Sites: Week 13

JillAffiliate Marketing, Blog34 Comments

Ohhhhhh man! I have been excited to write this post for days now!

Remember how last week I said we had made our first sale for MyNaturafulReview.com and hit #1 and #5 for the keywords “buy Naturaful” and “Naturaful” respectively?

Well this week those top rankings paid off…in a big way!

How big you ask?

Let's get into it…

From 1 Sale to $250 in a Week

That's right, baby! Since last week's post, our site has started bringing in sales – totalling $254.88 to be exact!

And at the risk of sounding like a broken record, I wanted to reiterate my point from last week.

As you may recall, I mentioned in my previous post that we had received a few emails from people feeling a tad disenchanted with their sites not making sales right off the bat.

And while I totally understand that feeling of disenchantmentโ€”because I have felt it before myself!โ€”I encourage you to hang in there and see your efforts through.

I mean, take this case study for example. When we first announced it back in January we approached it with a faint air of cockiness, thinking we would be able to crush rankings and make bank in the matter of weeks.

We were wrong.

In fact, mere weeks after we launched the case study Google unrolled a second Hummingbird update and our first website (HowToTreatCellulite.com) was buried, causing us to pivot our approach and test out our new method targeting branded keywords.

Did it suck that we put a whole bunch of work into a site we were then going to just abandon? Absolutely!

Did we let that drag us down and keep us from testing another approach. Hellz no.

And it is because we kept tweaking our approach and testing out new strategies that we were able to create a site that within the matter of 10 days went from making no sales, to over $250.

You see, that is the power of affiliate marketing.

Sure it can be frustrating, but so can every single other online monetization method. The beauty of affiliate marketing though is once your site begins to gain traction, your job becomes a whoolllle lot easier.

Think about it: We haven't driven any links to that site in a few weeks and yet it is making money without us having to spend one single minute on it in the last month.

THAT, my friends, is the power of affiliate marketing.

Not only can it allow you multiple streams of passive income, but these sites we are teaching you how to build throughout this case study (and all our videos since the beginning of 2014) are incredibly easy to create, build, monetize, and scale.

You just have to figure out a process that works for you.

1 sale to 250 dollars in a week? Well, that escalated quickly. Good thing you didn’t go for Amazon for this one, otherwise you probably wouldn’t have made as much money.

    • That’s one of the main reasons I don’t dig Amazon for anything that isn’t big ticket or expensive ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Francisco

Do you need a landing page for pre-selling, or should it be enough with a clean niche theme?

    • Not entirely sure what you mean re. “pre-selling”…can you elaborate? You shouldn’t have to pre-sell anything with these sites ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Francisco

        Yes ma’am ๐Ÿ™‚
With pre-selling I mean landing pages that straight-forward offer you a product/service… you know, those long landing pages with the CTA button at the end of the page.

        • Josh Stanton

Yeah so just use a simple theme like the one we’re using in this case study. Take out any distractions and funnel them through your links. That means remove the option to comment, no ads apart from the one sidebar banner. No outgoing links unless it’s your affiliate link and finally use a big call to action link at the bottom.

It’s better to make it look like a website or a blog rather than a landing/sales page.

  • Sam

hello, Thanks a lot for this amazing case study..Learnt a lot from it ..
What i wanna know is what plugin are you using in the sidebar, making the product to scroll all the way to the bottom…
    Thanks….

    • Josh Stanton

Yep its called “Q2W3 Fixed Widget (Sticky Widget)”. Just run a search in the plugin directory and it should pick it up.

Just found your site today and decided to start from the beginning and read the whole thing. Very cool site. I’ve added you to my Feedly so I won’t miss a post.

I have a question in regards to your PBN links. When you say you’ve sent 15 PBN links to your money site, do you mean 1 link from 15 separate domains or say 5 separate domains with 3 links per post/page?

    • Hey Mike,

Happy to have you along for the ride!! We drove 15 links from 15 different domains!

  • Rick

So what happened to the site? I see it got redirected. Did the company complain about the name?

    • Sorry just saw this now! They changed their terms of service and we could no longer use a branded domain…so we re-directed it ๐Ÿ™‚

  • cbrandon

Hi, Is this the latest update on the site? How did it get affected, when you had to redirect it to a different URL? Also, what would you look for in the Terms of Service to know whether or not you can use a product name in a URL? Thanks!

    • Hey there,

Sorry I’m just seeing this now!

Re. the Terms of Service – you should be looking for anything around domain restrictions – that’s usually where the company will state whether or not you can use their brand name in your URL

As for our site – it’s doing well! Still cranking in sales and cruising along….the redirect slowed it down for maybe a week or so, but overall it’s still cranking!

Hi, I was curious about how you guys have your blog networks setup to avoid Google penalizing them. I’ve been reading a lot about how Google is good at discovering them. Do you spread them out over different hosts? Are do you use C class hosting to give each domain different IP addresses? How do you handle that? Your insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks….Andre

    • Hey @andreflash:disqus Josh emailed you about this…did you get it?

      • andreflash

Hi, Jill. Thanks. Yes he did. Sorry about that. I posted the question on here first. Then decided it would be better addressed in a private email….Andre

      • Sam Sherry

I am also curious about how you have your pbn hosted. I’ve heard similar things to what andreflash mentioned, and I was wondering what you do. Can you please send me an email with what you do and maybe any advice on the topic? Also, I have loved reading this case study! Very interesting and entertaining! Congrats on your site’s success!

I have been through just about every page of information you have offered and I have started my journey. I did stray a little from some of the products you guys were using but my website is up and running. Still some kinks to get out but I started it yesterday and I’m already on the second page of Bing and first page of Google for a few of my keywords. I still have a lot to do to complete my site and I’m actually afraid that these numbers I’m seeing are not legit. I’m using Long Tail Pro and from the results I’ve check it out on bing and google and sure enough I’m there! I’m still waiting for my affiliate account to get approved, hope this is a good sign1

    • BOOM!! Nice work! And how is the site going now?

Sorry I didn’t see this months ago…must have gotten lost in the comment shuffle. Sorry about that ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Hey Andrew – yeah your site will bop up and down in the search engines for the first few weeks or so…so don’t be alarmed if you drop a tiny bit.

It’s totally part of the process BUT I’m SO proud of you for getting it set up and rolling!! *high five*

      • Andrew Eubanks

I should be approved for my affiliate program today. Have you heard anything about bodybuilding.com’s affiliate program, good or bad?

        • Hey Andrew!

No I haven’t, but they seem like a pretty legit site…I guess you can just try it and if it doesn’t work out have another one on backup ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Ferdy

Found this post series while I was taking a quick break at work and well… that break escalated a bit; just read each and every page. Screw the nine to five, eh?;) I’ve enjoyed it very much, especially liked the strategy part.
I was just trying to find an update about this project but with no luck. Is the site still going strong?

    • Hahaha you got carried down the rabbit hole, eh? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Glad you found the series useful!

We haven’t updated or touched the site in months…however it is still trucking along ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Natalie Rickards

I have loved reading these posts and am really interested to hear how the site is doing now, especially since the recent changes to Google. Some other online marketers have been talking about sites that took hits with links coming from PBNs?

    • Our PBN hasn’t really taken a hit….at least not yet, so for now the sites are all still cruising along ๐Ÿ™‚

  • John Ballard

Wasn’t the help of the links from the PBN mostly responsible for the early success of your site? That’s an $800 investment a noob like me isn’t willing to make so quickly.

    • You don’t have to spend $800…you can build your own…or you can guest post!

There are loads of ways to do this ๐Ÿ™‚

  • hey guys,
I know I am years late on this case study but I just found out about the screw the nine to five. I already got some solid value reading your blogs, keep it up! ๐Ÿ™‚
anyhow, would you be so kind to chat a little more about how the site did in the coming weeks/months and why is it down now? did google penalize you?
    thanks, rok

    • So happy to hear you found us, Rok!

As for the site… we let it expire back in 2015 when we moved away from focusing on niche sites ๐Ÿ™‚

      Sorry about that!

      • Rok Krivec

Thanks for your response ๐Ÿ™‚ I did notice some changes on the blog but wasn’t really sure what’s going on.
Again, thanks for getting back to me, much appreciated.
